3 Tips to a Great Resume

The goal of your resume is not a brief accounting of your education and work experience. Much more is required. Yours needs to jump to the top of the pile and grab the prospective employer’s interest in just a few short seconds, research indicates.

Here are three tips sure to gain yours the attention it needs:

Write your resume like an effective advertising. Good ads get a quick read. Great ads create action. You have about 20 seconds to “sell” yourself, so make a strong start to get your desired action: the interview. This is not the time for modesty. Shout it from the rooftops, or at least from the top of the first page. Use powerful words, especially active verbs. Don’t hype, but assertively point out all the reasons why you’re the right candidate.

Find out what the employer really needs. This is key. How can you present yourself effectively for the position without knowing exactly what the perfect candidate looks like? Hints can be found in the job offer, but you may need to dig deeper. Figure out how you can make this employer’s life easier by covering his needs, and then tell him through the words of your resume.

After gathering all the information you can about the position, create a custom version of your resume to fit the bill. Never, ever be untruthful, but definitely highlight your education, skills, and past experience that most fit the job description. Show the employer you can deliver what’s needed to get the job done.

Creating the perfect resume for the job you’re applying for isn’t difficult. While these steps may involve more work on the front end, they may also save you time and effort in the long run. After all, you won’t be submitting any more resumes once you hear the words, “You’re hired!”

Why Seasonal Jobs May Be the Answer to Your Job Search

Getting in through the back door, so to speak, may be a viable option to gaining long-term employment in a tight job market. This is according to a new survey conducted during the period of August 17 to September 2, 2010, by CareerBuilder, a leading online site for jobs and career development.

The survey revealed that of the more than 2400 employers polled, some 40 percent would likely transition some seasonal workers hired during the last quarter of 2010 into permanent positions, up almost 10 percent over 2009 figures.

While retail and customer service positions made up the bulk of the openings, with 33 percent and 31 percent respectively, other job hirings were planned in administrative support, packaging and delivery, the hospitality industry, and various other retail and office related areas such as public relations, marketing, and inventory management. Almost half of employers asked indicated they were planning to pay at least $10 or more per hour, while 9 percent expected to pay at least $16 per hour.

For job seekers this is good news. According to Brent Rasmussen, President of CareerBuilder North America, “Seasonal work can be a valuable opportunity for job seekers to not only gain new skills and experience, but to also land full-time, permanent positions.”

While the hiring for the 2010 season may be all but over, those who are in seasonal positions should heed the tips participating survey employers gave for turning that seasonal job into a permanent full-time position.

Their top tips were:

31 percent of respondents said:
Be proactive in providing customer service, instead of waiting to be asked.

28 percent of respondents said:
Tell the employer immediately upon hire that a full-time position is desired.

23 percent of respondents said:
Take the initiative in requesting more responsibilities and projects.

20 percent of respondents said:
Demonstrate value to the company by presenting new and better ideas.

15 percent of respondents said:
Be concerned about the organization by asking questions.

In a down job market, keeping that seasonal job may be the answer to the job search dilemma.

Applying for Jobs Online – What You Need to Know

Like it or not, if you’re in the job-hunting process, you’ll be faced with applying for a job online during the application process. You likely have concerns about how to “stand out” online. So what can you do to garner real attention to your application in a sea of lifeless web applications?

Here are a few tips and tricks, must-do’s and must-don’ts to give your application the sparkle it needs.

Be certain to follow directions perfectly on the application. Entering information into the wrong field is a surefire way to get passed by quickly, and it’s easy to do when you’re typing away over and over on multiple applications.

Similarly, complete all fields, including the optional ones. Check your spelling and grammar. Then re-check. Submitting an error-free application is imperative.

Tailor each application to the specific company you’re applying with. Do some research on the company itself and its industry. Use key industry phrases, and include wording from the company’s website and the job posting to show you’ve done your homework.

Include any specific statistics or exact numbers pertinent to your experience and skillsets.

Send a cover letter with a strong objective statement, and include links to any online profiles such as Linkedin.

Always be totally honest about your past experience, education, and legal history.

If you’re required to attach your resume, make sure all dates, spellings and phone numbers match what you’ve entered into the online job application. You may be required to submit your resume in the body of the online application form. If that is the case, do not send it as an attachment, as many companies do not accept attachments due to virus risks.

Complete all other optional fields, including the section for comments, skills inventory, and any assessment testing.

Lastly, send a follow-up email to the recruiter or hiring manager. If the job posting states “No phone calls,” do not call.
